Go out of Chestnuts Guest house turn left then immediately right which is (lake road) follow this road till you come to a cross road turn left up Ellerthwaite road then 2nd right. This road will take you into the centre of Windermere just keep on this road till you come to the main Keswick to Kendal road turn right.. Ascend the hill, to pass by Orrest Head Farm on your right after 350yds– 200yds further up, pass by the farmstead of Alice Howe– continue uphill for a further 200yds, to locate a large wooden gate on your right, leading into rough pasture-land. Go through this gate and follow the cart track for 200yds to reach a Y-junction.-Bear right, to pass through a wooden gate 35yds away-Continue along the track and in the opposite corner of this field, (just prior to a gate), turn left across a ladder-stile.-Proceed for 100yds, alongside the right-hand wall, then turn sharp right.– Continue parallel with a wire fence, to head for a wooden stile 75yds distant. Being aware of passing trains, go directly across the railway line to enter the field opposite.-Follow the well– defined footpath for 50yds, then turn left, to climb over a ladder-stile.– cross over a beck, to link up with a hard-surfaced track.– Turn right and within 150yds, reach a y-junction.– Turn left, signposted (school Knott) and 350yds further on, reach a gate across the route. On the opposite side of the gate, bear left, signposted (Public Footpath) and follow a grassy path, which ascends in varying grades of steepness, parallel to the left-hand wall, to reach a wooden ladder after 1/4 mile .– Cross over the stile bear right.— As you look up, School Knott resembles the shape of a saddle. Follow the path uphill (indistinct at times), to aim for the highest peak, which is seen slightly to the left of centre. To depart the top, locate School Knott Tarn which can be seen 350yds away , on the opposite side of this “mountain”.— Descend across the grass, directly towards the tarn, to pass through a swing gate adjacent to a field— gate — Walk towards the edge of this very secluded Tarn, then bear right , to walk alongside a gully on your left.— After 200yds, pass by a large gate on your left, to go through another gate 50 yds further on. Continue along a double-rutted track, which gradually descends for 1/2 mile, to reach an inverted y junction.— Go straight ahead and pass through a large wooden gate 275yds further on.—On the opposite side, proceed for a maximum of 20yds, then bear left off the main track.— Follow a minor footpath across the centre of rough pasture-land to arrive at an iron swing-gate adjacent to a large wooden gate. Turn left onto a hard-surfaced track, which will terminate after 125yds at a lane.—Turn right and follow this lane downhill for 1/4 mile to reach a set of crossroads. —Turn left, then 1st right into Princes Road. At the far end is Chestnuts Guest house. |
